Sai Wong is a simple man who lives in China right on the border of Mongolia. A day long, long time ago Sai Wong acquired a beautiful horse, a stallion of rare quality and beauty. Everyone who saw the horse thought he was the finest horse they’d ever seen. The people of the village expressed to Sai Wong “You are very blessed and fortunate Sai Wong to own of such a great horse.” Sai Wong humbly replied “It may be a blessing, it may be a misfortune. I don’t know. Only time will tell.” One day the great stallion bolted and ran off into the forest and left Sai Wong. All the village people exclaimed “What a great misfortune that your horse has gone Sai Wong” Sai Wong’s responded “It may be a misfortune, it may be a blessing. I don’t know. Only time will tell.” Many moons later the great Stallion returned home to Sai Wong, but now accompanied by a mare of equal quality and beauty. The village people cheered “Sai Wong what a blessing that you now have two wonderful horses.” Sai Wong said “It may be a blessing, it may be a misfortune. I don’t know. Only time will tell.” The years pass and Sai Wong watches his only son grow into a robust and healthy young man. One day as the son was out riding, a snake crossed their path startling the horse. The stallion reared up and fell back crushing the son’s legs leaving him paralysed. The village people cried “What a terrible misfortune Sai Wong that your only son has been paralysed.” Sai Wong said “It may be a misfortune, it may be a blessing. I don’t know. Only time will tell.” Soon after, the Mongolian army invaded China and all the young men of the village were conscripted to war, all but Sai Wong’s son. Not one man ever returned home. Life is full of ups and downs, like rolling waves. We’re happy when we’re on top of the waves  and unhappy when we’re in the trough . Our vision is very short-sighted when we have a view of the world in this way and we just get tossed around according to outside circumstances. Nothing in life happens by chance it’s all perfectly set up for our learning, for our growth. What appears to be a misfortune can be a great teacher, a blessing that we just don’t understand yet and we never will if we’re just seeing a small part of the picture rather than the whole picture. Trust that the universe, God, the Supreme, the absolute or whatever you call it has got your best interest at heart and everything that happens in your life is in fact for your benefit, everything is perfect and the way it should be, even though at the time it doesn't seem so. There are really no misfortunes, only blessings and lessons. Everything’s a blessing.
